State looks to recoup costs of cleanup

MILFORD — Gov. M. Jodi Rell Thursday told state officials to work with the insurer and the company that owns the tractor-trailer that rolled over Wednesday to recoup the state’s costs to clean up the accident site. The truck took out 150 feet of metal guardrail, three light poles, a few signs and several utility poles as it veered off the Exit 40 off-ramp on the northbound side of Interstate 95, state police said.

The crash knocked out power to the area and kept the off-ramp closed the entire day as crews worked to clean up the mess.

The truck driver, Janos Siklosi, 58, of Florida, was upgraded Thursday at Yale-New Haven Hospital from critical to serious condition.

“The state of Connecticut incurred various costs in responding to and cleaning up this accident,” said Rell’s spokesman Adam Liegeot.

The state Department of Environmental Protection was called to clean up the spilled diesel fuel from the truck, and the state Department of Consumer Protection was called to deal with the load of clementine oranges that spilled from the trailer.

A representative of the truck owner, A&M Trucking, of Jefferson, Maine, could not be immediately reached for comment Thursday.

The governor also plans to issue a proclamation to honor the firefighters who rescued Miklos despite the danger of downed live wires near the truck he was trapped inside, Liegeot said.
